Accessibility Settings

Varsity Learning includes several settings to improve readability and accessibility based on your needs.

Math Display

By default, math expressions are rendered using MathJax (formatted equations). If you prefer plain text or experience slow rendering, you can switch display modes.

To change your math display setting:

  1. Log in and go to your home page
  2. Click your name in the top-right corner and select Profile Settings
  3. Under Display Preferences, choose your preferred math rendering mode:
    • MathJax — formatted equations (default)
    • Plain text — AsciiMath notation, no rendering

Text Size and Contrast

Varsity Learning respects your browser and operating system accessibility settings:

  • Font size — increase your browser's default font size (Ctrl/Cmd + in most browsers)
  • High contrast — enable your OS high-contrast mode; the platform will follow
  • Dark mode — not currently available as a platform setting; use a browser extension or OS dark mode overlay

Keyboard Navigation

The assessment player and course page support keyboard navigation:

Action Key
Move between answer fields Tab
Submit answer Enter (in most fields)
Open math palette Click yellow arrow, then Tab to navigate
Expand/collapse content Enter or Space on focusable elements

Screen Reader Support

Varsity Learning is designed to work with screen readers. Math expressions rendered by MathJax include MathML markup, which NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver can read.

For best results with screen readers: - Use NVDA + Firefox or JAWS + Chrome - Enable MathJax rendering (the default) rather than plain text mode - If equations are not being read, check your screen reader's math verbosity settings

Graph and Drawing Questions

Graph questions and drawing tools require mouse interaction and are not fully accessible via keyboard alone. If you use assistive technology and encounter a question you cannot interact with, contact your instructor — they can grant an accommodation or provide an alternative format.

Requesting Accommodations

Accessibility accommodations (extended time, extra attempts, alternative formats) are granted by your instructor, not by the Varsity Learning support team. Contact your instructor directly with accommodation documentation from your institution's disability services office.
