Gradebook

Overview

The gradebook records student scores automatically as they submit assessments. Access it from the course navigation bar by clicking Gradebook.

Gradebook View

The gradebook displays a spreadsheet-style grid:

  • Rows — one row per enrolled student
  • Columns — one column per gradebook item (assessment)
  • Cells — the student's current score as a percentage

Click any column header to sort by that assessment's scores. Click a student's name to view all their submissions.

Score Display

Each cell shows the student's current score. The score reflects the assessment's scoring policy (best attempt, last attempt, average, etc. — configured per assessment).

  • Bold — the student has submitted at least one attempt
  • Gray/dash — not yet submitted
  • Late indicator — a small icon if the submission was after the due date

Overriding a Score

To manually adjust a student's grade:

  1. Click the score cell you want to change
  2. Click Override
  3. Enter the new score (as a percentage or raw points)
  4. Optionally add a note

Overrides are tracked separately from submission scores and are visible in the student's grade detail view.

Excusing a Score

To mark an assessment as excused for a student (excluded from average calculation):

  1. Click the score cell
  2. Click Excuse

Excused items are shown as in the gradebook and are not counted toward the course average.

Grade Categories

You can group assessments into weighted grade categories (e.g., Homework 30%, Quizzes 20%, Tests 50%):

  1. Go to Course SettingsGrade Categories
  2. Create categories and assign weights
  3. Drag assessments into the appropriate category

The gradebook will display a weighted total column once categories are configured.

Exporting Grades

For quick CSV downloads, click Export at the top of the gradebook and choose the columns to include (all assessments, totals only, or selected items).

For more control, use the Gradebook Export wizard, available at /tools/gradebookExport. The wizard walks you through:

  1. Choosing which course(s) to export
  2. Selecting which assessments and columns to include
  3. Picking a file format (CSV or Excel)
  4. Downloading the generated file

The exported file is compatible with Excel, Google Sheets, and most LMS import tools.

Course Statistics

The gradebook includes a basic Statistics view (the legacy IMathAS in-course statistics page) showing:

  • Class distribution — histogram of scores for each assessment
  • Per-assessment averages and completion rates
  • Question-level correct-rate data

This is a simple summary meant for quick spot-checks — useful for identifying which assessments are giving students trouble.

LMS Grade Sync

If your course is connected via LTI, grades sync automatically to your LMS gradebook after each submission. You can also trigger a manual sync from the gradebook if a score failed to pass back.
